Tennis court dimensions at a glance
A tennis court is 78 ft (23.77 m) long. Doubles is 36 ft (10.97 m) wide; singles is 27 ft (8.23 m) wide. The marked rectangles cover 2,808 sq ft for doubles and 2,106 sq ft for singles, approximately 260.87 m² and 195.65 m². These figures exclude the space beyond the baselines and sidelines.
In this guide
Singles and doubles court size
| Marked geometry | Imperial | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Doubles court | 78 × 36 ft | 23.7744 × 10.9728 m |
| Singles court | 78 × 27 ft | 23.7744 × 8.2296 m |
| Singles sideline inset | 4.5 ft each side | 1.3716 m each side |
| Service line from net | 21 ft each side | 6.4008 m each side |
The doubles alleys account for the width difference. Each singles sideline sits 4.5 ft inside its corresponding doubles sideline.
How the tennis lines fit together
Baselines, sidelines and alleys
The two baselines close the 78 ft length. Doubles sidelines define the full 36 ft width. Singles sidelines create a 27 ft playing width, leaving a 4.5 ft doubles alley on each side.
Service boxes and centre service line
A service line is located 21 ft from the net on each side. The centre service line divides the space between the service lines into four service boxes. The centre marks on the baselines help orient service position.
Marked playing court vs tiled project footprint
The 78 × 36 ft rectangle is not automatically the order area. A complete project may include a selected surrounding surface, access space and perimeter finishing beyond the marked playing court.
Use the full intended flooring length and width for a tile estimate. Design Your Court keeps the tennis line geometry at its regulation size and does not automatically add surrounding space or an allowance for cuts and spares. Confirm those items in the project plan.
The marked geometry does not change with the chosen playing-surface category. Compare grass, clay, hard, synthetic and modular approaches in the tennis surface types guide, then return to this measured footprint for the project brief.
What to include in a tennis flooring brief
- Total tiled dimensions and working units
- Singles-only or combined singles and doubles lines
- Base condition, drainage context and site photos
- Playing zone, surround and line colors
- Product preference, destination and installation scope
Tennis dimension questions
Are singles and doubles tennis courts the same length?
Yes. Both are 78 ft long. Doubles is 36 ft wide and singles is 27 ft wide.
Does the court size include the surrounding surface?
No. The stated dimensions describe the marked playing court. Confirm the total tiled project footprint separately.
Does the tennis court surface type change the marked dimensions?
No. The marked singles and doubles geometry remains a separate planning input. The selected surface system can change the base, construction, maintenance and supply scope, but it does not redefine the marked court dimensions.
Where can I compare tennis flooring choices?
Review the Tennis Court Flooring Application and the related surface comparison before requesting a product review.
